STINGAR Version 2.3 Released

Chapel Hill, NC. May 18th 2026 – Forewarned Inc. announces an updated version of the successful STINGAR platform.

The STINGAR v2.3 release builds on the v2.2 platform and further strengthens how higher education and research networks turn honeypot sessions into actionable defense. This update adds a new Honeypot Agent coding tool backend, IDS/IPS rules generation, sharper attack analysis workflows, and clearer update visibility—incorporating feedback from our partners and continuing to improve capture, analysis, and maintenance of threat intelligence data.

The STINGAR Version 2.3 platform contains the following updates:

Honeypot Agent – A centralized resource that enables STINGAR users to request new Honeypot types or new CVE emulation for existing honeypots with simple prompts and pull down menus. The HP Agent creates new Honeypot code based on over 100 protocol templates that have been developed over the past 2 years. Once created & approved, the Honeypot docker image will be published (along with all source code) on the Honeypot App Store and available for download and deployment directly from the STINGAR dashboard. This feature provides access to new honeypot types beyond the default installations, allowing organizations to expand their threat detection capabilities. Users can browse available honeypots, search and filter by category, and seamlessly install new configurations into their STINGAR library.

IDS/IPS Rules – Security teams can generate Suricata and Snort rules directly from honeypot session data. A preview pane supports both formats with refresh and copy-to-clipboard actions; rules can be exported as downloadable files or consumed automatically via a feed endpoint (GET /api/v2/ids-rules/feed) for Suricata, Snort, and compatible appliances including Cisco Firepower, Check Point, and FortiConverter environments. A background job keeps cached rule files current, and the feed UI shows date range controls, last-generated timestamps, and both feed URLs. IDS/IPS Rules appears under Security Tools in the sidebar, with updated user, API, and OpenAPI documentation.

Attack Analysis – Analysts can filter sessions by IP address or CIDR (IPv4 and IPv6) using a validated, debounced search bar with Enter-to-submit. The source column now shows host and port (IP:port) on desktop for faster triage, while narrow viewports show IP only for a cleaner mobile layout.

Dashboard and System Updates – Sidebar expand/collapse state persists across visits and refresh. When a newer platform version is available, a red badge appears on Settings and navigates directly to the System Updates tab; the Install Update section is highlighted, scrolls into view, and meets WCAG focus and contrast requirements. Release notes for available updates display in System Updates (scrollable Markdown below Install Update), with HP App Store–supplied notes or a bundled fallback from the API.

Enhanced Integration – Improved integration with the HP App Store for remote honeypot management, including automatic metadata synchronization, configuration management, and seamless installation workflows.

The update is free to all existing licensees of the STINGARv2 platform and is backward compatible with v2.2.1. Upgrading requires updating docker-compose to v2.3 image tags—a simple process that typically takes only a few minutes. Organizations using the IDS/IPS feed should configure their Suricata or Snort deployment to pull from the published feed URL after upgrade.

The platform will continue to receive new features and fixes. Forewarned is also advancing a cloud-native STINGAR offering for organizations that want elastic, managed deployment options.
